Kidō's Tales of Times Past

Kidō Okamoto, best known for the Hanshichi detective stories, remembering the Tokyo he grew up in as it turned from Edo into Meiji. The smell of the streets, the noise of the theatres, fires, earthquakes. Not invented: recorded.

It is the second longest work here, and it rewards dipping in at whatever chapter catches your eye rather than reading straight through. The voice is unhurried, which makes it good listening.
