Two young gentlemen, got up exactly like English soldiers, with glittering rifles on their shoulders and two dogs like white bears at their heels, were walking deep in the mountains.
Two gentlemen, lost in the mountains, come upon a handsome Western restaurant. Each door they pass carries a new instruction. Comb your hair. Scrape the mud from your boots. Rub this cream on your face. They do as they are told, and only slowly begin to wonder why.
The story is driven by writing on doors. In an ordinary book those notices sit buried in the prose; here each one arrives on its own, in its own bubble, at the pace the gentlemen read it. You work it out exactly when they do.
